Week Six: Who Am I? Part II: Be Like Water Naturally we are water. Approximately 70% of our bodies are made up of water through our body fluids and blood, which feeds and nourishes our cells, organs, muscles and our overall well-being. Coincidentally the world is covered by more than 70% water and also plays an essential role in the well-being of the world’s eco system. This natural connection between ourselves and nature is not surprising since the sound of water or just being near water can create a calming and peaceful state of being. Water evokes a meditative state that makes us happier, healthier, calmer, more creative, and more able to enjoy the present moment.  The element of water represents flow and change.  Where in your life do you go with the flow? Where are you creating resistance to flow or changes?  Being in the flow rather than being stuck or “frozen”, is allowing what is to happen, to be present, open and adapting to the changes happening in and around us. Acknowledging the flow of water is to be like water. When we allows ourselves to be like water we can release tensions or resistance within, open up our pathways within our body and mind and allow the present flow of change and growth.  Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon encapsulates this essence when he says: “Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”  A great attribute of water is that it can transform to fit into any situation yet it still can remain entirely true to itself.  Being true to ourselves is being as fluid as possible. When we have an open mind one free from ego, we can then be who we truly are and adapt with grace to the changes of life. When we are adaptable it opens up the ability to have our life force energy flow within us and offers us the chance to upgrade ourselves to grow and build our inner strengths. We can choose to be like water and embrace the flow of life. In doing so we become powerful, confident, spontaneous and free.  Be Like Water Meditation: To start, everyone can stand up, feet at shoulder distance apart, close your eyes, standing up tall, breathe in through the nose filling the stomach and out through the mouth, slowing down your breathing and clearing your mind. Now take yourself away to a quiet private natural setting, imagine you are in your very special place. A place that brings you joy.  Your place is unique to you.  Now with your very special place in mind, imagine a body of water. Enjoy the sound of the water, feel the spray of it on your face, body and toes.  Immerse yourself in the waves of your emotions.  Will you be tossed around as the waves, or with ease flowing to the shore?   Feel the water as you adapt to any circumstance or vessel water fills. Ride the waves and feel the ease of the water flow.   Feel the power it has to nourish and heal.  Allow the waves to be free, be compassionate and trust the flow.  Enjoy the free flow, allow the water to be within you, around you without judgment or resistance.  Allow the calm to enter you.  Be at peace, flow with ease, and feel the harmony. Bring yourself back and breathe in and exhale out and be like water my friends.  By Kohai Dianne Hadad 3rd Degree Black Belt, Renge Dojo Certified Professional Coach, SHINE, Family Wellness Club
