Born in Nishimura Naha, Okinawa, Sensei Higaonna was the highest authority and creator of Naha-te.  Sensei Higaonna studied martial arts with Sensei Arakaki Seisho who came from Kume village and briefly with Kojo Taite when Sensei Arakaki had to leave for business in China.  Later he went abroad to the Chinese city of Fuzhou, where he studied the art of chi-chi, or Chinese boxing. It is believed he studied Shaolin chan.  Sensei Higaonna first spent years doing household chores for master Ryu Ryu Ko, until he saved his daughter from drowning during a heavy flood and begged the master to teach Kung-fu as a reward. Xie Zhong Xiang finally took Higaonna on as a student. Sensei Higaonna is one of the originators and innovators of Okinawan karate. He had several students who went on to become quite famous, including Chojun Miyagi, Kyoda Juhatsu, Higa Seiko, and Kenwa Mabuni to name a few.
